Media Matters

On Sunday morning I teach a junior high girl's class. The topic for this week is "Media Matters". The girls will list their favorites in the following categories: TV Show - Movie - Song - Magazine - Book - Activity - Website.

I found a neat quote about media. It said that a steady diet of immorality will make what's wrong seem right - or at least "normal". Isn't that true? The entertainment world tries to get us to believe that what is shown in the media is right or normal. Well, it might be what is right and normal to some, but it is most certainly not always right or normal according to God and His Word.

Philippians 4:8, Finally, brothers, whatever is true (honest), whatever is noble (honorable), whatever is right (good, righteous, approved of in God's eyes), whatever is pure (clean, not dirty or vulgar), whatever is lovely (acceptable, clean), whatever is admirable (not wrong)—if anything is excellent (virtuous or praiseworthy (acceptable to God - glorifies God)—think about such things.

After listing their "favorites", the girls will read this verse above. They will then take each category and use Paul's test for their favorites. They will find how their favorites measure up to what Paul tells us we should be thinking about. Of course, this is really God's test.

Another passage to consider is 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22, which says, "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil."

So, what about you? What are your favorites? How do they rate with Paul's/God's test?
