Who Are You?

Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

2 Timothy 2:19

If someone were to ask, "Who are you?", what would you say?  You would probably blurt out your name.  That would be logical.

What if they asked again, "But, who are you?"  If it were me, I could answer, "I am Joe's wife.  I am mom to L, Z, J, and T."

Maybe they asked again, "Who are you?"  I would probably be getting annoyed by this time, but I would go into details about things I do, "I'm a blogger.  I'm a Bible class teacher.  I'm a 4-H leader.  I'm a PTO president.....etc"  I would give more details about who I am.

So, let's say the "asker" (not a word, but you know what I mean, I think...) is God, and He is asking, "Who are you?"  Now how do you answer?  What is your answer?

For me, I would say, "I am your child.  I am a follower of your Son, Jesus.  I am a Christian."  I would want to identify with Him and have Him hear me say those specific things because He is the judge of my eternal life.  I would want to make sure He knew where I stood.....firmly, without waiver.

Hmmmmmmm, isn't that just what He asks us to do as His children?  The Bible says in many, many places to confess with our mouths, doesn't it?  So, why, if we were asked by a random person who we are, would we not say "Christ follower" or "Christian" first or at least in part of the conversation?  What makes it so difficult for us to "confess Him" to others, even though we know that is what He wants from us?  Is it fear?  Perhaps.  We're not sure what the reactions of others is going to be.

Remember Peter?  He strongly confessed Christ, but then later denied him three times, after assuring Him that he could never deny Him.  (Luke 9:18-27 and Matthew 26:73-75)

The confession we make at our conversion to Christ isn't a one-time thing, but something we show daily, be the words we choose, by our actions, by our reactions, and by our choices.  We confess Him by striving to live for Him daily and by following Him daily.

Who are YOU?

But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
